By:World Health Organisation Staff,Bruce Allan Gordon,Richard Mackay,Eva Rehfuess,World Health Organization
Published on 2004 by World Health Organization

*** Highly commended in the Public Health Category of the British Medical Association Book Competition 2005*** Every child has the right to live in a healthy supportive environment - an environment that encourages growth and development and protects from disease. Many of the world s children however are exposed to hazards in the very places that should be safest - the home school and community. Considering that their growing bodies are particularly sensitive to environmental threats the final burden of childhood disease is substantial. Every year more than three million children die due to unhealthy environments. This atlas articulates where and why more than three million children die every year due to unhealthy environments. It tackles issues as diverse as the devastating and largely unknown impact of indoor air pollution the unfashionable tragedy of sanitation and complex emerging issues like climate change. Full-color maps and graphics clearly demonstrate the threats that children face everywhere and underscore the impact of poverty on children s health. While this crisis cannot be ignored and demands urgent action success stories such as the Montreal Protocol show a way forward for the world to make sure that our children will inherit a safer planet and a brighter future.

Read Children’s Orthopaedics and Fractures now online

Children’s Orthopaedics and Fractures
By:Michael Benson,John Fixsen,Malcolm Macnicol,Klausdieter Parsch
Published on 2010-03-10 by Springer Science & Business Media

Con?rming the British genetic trait for writing and publishing (as well as acting), two English (Oxford and London) and a Scottish orthopaedic surgeon (Edinburgh) have produced a third edition of their comprehensive text, joined, as in the second edition by an editor from Germany, recognizing its part in the European community. The 62 physician contributors are drawn from pink-colored countries in our childhood geography books—the old British Empire from Australia to Zambia and two from the former colony, the USA. The original purpose of the book was to give residents or registrars an easily accessible and concise description of diseases and conditions encountered in the practice of paediatric orthopaedic surgery and to prepare for their examinations. But the practicing orthopaedic s- geon will ?nd an update of current practice that can be read for clarity and constraint—enough but not too much. A foreword might be a preview of things to come, but a “back word” of what was thought to be the ?nal say on the subject is needed for a perspective in progress. A “back word” look reveals the tremendous progress in medical diagnosis and treatment of which paediatric orthopaedics and fracture care is a component. Clubfoot treatment based on the dictums of Hiram Kite has had a revolutionary change by Ponseti. The chapter by Eastwood has the details on cast application and orthotics follow-up to obtain the 95% correction without the extensive surgery many of us thought was needed.

Read Brain and Art now online

Brain and Art
By:Bruno Colombo
Published on 2019-08-29 by Springer Nature

This book analyzes and discusses in detail art therapy, a specific tool used to sustain health in affective developments, rehabilitation, motor skills and cognitive functions. Art therapy is based on the assumption that the process of making art (music, dance, painting) sparks emotions and enhances brain activity. Art therapy is used to encourage personal growth, facilitate particular brain areas or activity patterns, and improve neural connectivity. Treating neurological diseases using artistic strategies offers us a unique option for engaging brain structural networks that enhance the brain’s ability to form new connections. Based on brain plasticity, art therapy has the potential to increase our repertoire for treating neurological diseases. Neural substrates are the basis of complex emotions relative to art experiences, and involve a widespread activation of cognitive and motor systems. Accordingly, art therapy has the capacity to modulate behavior, cognition, attention and movement. In this context, art therapy can offer effective tools for improving general well-being, quality of life and motivation in connection with neurological diseases. The book discusses art therapy as a potential group of techniques for the treatment of neurological disturbances and approaches the relationship between humanistic disciplines and neurology from a holistic perspective, reflecting the growing interest in this interconnection.

Read The Christian Virtues in Medical Practice now online

The Christian Virtues in Medical Practice
By:Edmund D. Pellegrino MD,David C. Thomasma
Published on 1996-04-01 by Georgetown University Press

Christian health care professionals in our secular and pluralistic society often face uncertainty about the place religious faith holds in today's medical practice. Through an examination of a virtue-based ethics, this book proposes a theological view of medical ethics that helps the Christian physician reconcile faith, reason, and professional duty. Edmund D. Pellegrino and David C. Thomasma trace the history of virtue in moral thought, and they examine current debate about a virtue ethic's place in contemporary bioethics. Their proposal balances theological ethics, based on the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, with contemporary medical ethics, based on the principles of beneficence, justice, and autonomy. The result is a theory of clinical ethics that centers on the virtue of charity and is manifest in practical moral decisions. Using Christian bioethical principles, the authors address today's divisive issues in medicine. For health care providers and all those involved in the fields of ethics and religion, this volume shows how faith and reason can combine to create the best possible healing relationship between health care professional and patient.

By:Ann Goldman,Richard Hain,Stephen Liben
Published on 2006-01 by Oxford University Press, USA

This book is the first authoritative, systematic and comprehensive text to define the increasingly important and evolving specialty of paediatric palliative care. It explores both the clinical aspects and the multidimensional and holistic nature of care for the dying child, based on theknowledge that all human experience has a physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual impact. The book covers ways of providing support in all of these areas both for the child, families, and carers, recognising the importance of teamwork and taking an evidence-based approach. The Oxford Textbook of Palliative Care for Children is about the care of children for whom cure of their underlying disease is not possible. It encompasses the physical management of symptoms such as pain and nausea, as well as social issues such as accessing appropriate education and funding, emotional issues such as techniques for communication, and spiritual issues such as feelings of guilt and isolation. The book suggests that if we are to maintain the quality of life for a child it is essential to recognise all these dimensions and try to address them. This can only be done by recognising the skills of a wide range of professionals and working together in ways that are not always intuitive to anyone discipline. It explores the multidimensional and holistic nature of care for the dying child. Read The Changing Shape of Art Therapy now online

The Changing Shape of Art Therapy
By:Andrea Gilroy,Gerry McNeilly
Published on 2000 by Jessica Kingsley Publishers

Including contributions from some of the leading art therapists in Britain, this important book addresses the key issues in the theory and practice of art therapy. The fundamental significance of the art in art therapy practice permeates the book, close attention being paid by several writers to the art-making process and the aesthetic responses of therapist and client. Other authors explore the tensions between art and therapy, images and speech, subjectivity and objectivity, arguing that the dynamic interplay between these elements is inherent to the practice of art therapy. The role of containment is another theme that is explored by contributors in a variety of ways to highlight the importance not only of the therapeutic containment of the client by the therapist, but also the containment of the therapist. The physical contexts of the session, within an art room and within the larger working environment, are identified as important arenas where conflict and tension is experienced and must be explored if art therapy is to continue to develop.
